Calling Out the Gold

Talking with a friend earlier this week, she mentioned something she does at her school known as “Calling out the Gold”. It refers to helping others see the talents and strengths they possess by intentionally speaking to them about their gifts. That phrase really struck home to me. In a world full of negativity and mean-spiritedness, we can counteract that by “calling out the gold” in others instead.

For instance, my wife Ellen is such an awesome person. One of her superpowers is an amazing knack of finding wonderful gifts for others. The cards and notes she sends are inspirational and heartfelt. She is constantly thinking about how others are feeling and what she can do to help. She exemplifies love in action. (This is just a small example of all the gold within her.)

Who can we think of today that would benefit from “calling out their gold”? During this season of giving, there is no greater gift than lifting someone up and affirming them in some way. Let’s infuse these next few weeks with support, kindness, graciousness, and compassion. Let’s choose to focus on the “gold” in others by calling it out!
