Perception of a Stone

When we pick up a stone, we get the impression that it is completely solid. However, if we zoom in enough, we can see that there is actually space between every atom and molecule. But for all practical purposes, those elements are bonded so tightly they appear as a single thing. If we zoom out from the stone while it is lying on the ground, it appears to just merge into the whole planet. Our perception of the stone’s essence depends greatly on our perspective.

So it is with ourselves. At times, we might see ourselves as just individuals, separate, disconnected, and alone. However, up close, we are a miraculously intricate system of cells and processes at work. Yet, from a broader point of view, we can come to understand that we are like individual cells that form the whole world . Our interconnectedness, both internally and externally, reveals that we are a part of something much larger than ourselves.

If we embrace this idea, we open ourselves to seeing the world as an extension of one another. We can see that we need each other and are at our best when we work interdependently with each other. Much of our pain and conflict in life comes from our perception of separation. No matter where we are or what we have done, we can choose today to look at our interconnection as a source of meaning and purpose. In little ways and small steps, we can move toward a healthier and more holistic relationship with ourselves and others. Through these processes, we can forge bonds that will allow us to form a rock-solid foundation together.
