Systems

Lily Pads.jpg

This past weekend, Ellen and I kayaked on Lake Marion. We meandered in and out of several coves. In one of the larger areas, the whole inlet was covered with patches of lily pads. Thousands of circular green entities, populated with beautiful white lotus flowers were all around us. We were in awe of the other-worldly feel of the place as we paddled through the sight. Ellen commented on the incredible ecological system at work through the whole network of flora and fauna. Fish, dragonflies, turtles, bees, alligators, and more, dancing to unique rhythms in concert with this captivating botanical world.

It dawned on me that this is just a micro-example of the world we live in. There is a system of connections and influences that guide our lives every day. In our haste, impatience, and distraction, we rarely see the intricate web that connects all living things. In our ignorance, we become at odds with the very threads that are working to bring balance and synergy to each of us. When we seek to align our daily interactions with the physical and relational principles that underlie the flow of life, we move closer to an integrated, purposeful existence.

Like the lily pads on the lake, we are all connected. If we work in accord with each other, sharing our skills, talents, and resources for the benefit of all, we create an interdependent system that serves to sustain us. If we really stop and think about it, our very being calls out for relationship and belonging. We are designed to fit into a bigger system. In that context is where we find meaning.
