The Power of Writing
With the start of school, I’ve been reflecting on important things that students need to learn. One of the most critical skills is the ability to write. While it is often difficult to master, it is worth the struggle and commitment to do so.
Writing is an act of creation, considered to be one of the highest levels of thinking (Bloom’s Taxonomy). It requires us to pull together words to reveal thoughts and ideas. Starting with a blank piece of paper or screen, we weave the alphabet into meaningful form and function. It provides an outlet for all the energy and chaos dancing in our minds. It is like fire, it can be harnessed to bring warmth and comfort, or it can be released to damage and destroy. But, in any case, it is a power that each of us has within us.
When students, or any of us for that matter, come to understand the strength of writing, despite the effort it sometimes requires, we become equipped to harness and amplify our skills, talents, and visions. When we can use the written word with efficiency and grace, the impact on the world is immeasurable.
